U/T Instructors
encompass a fairly wide range of experience from the most junior member
of staff who has just completed AGT 1 to the more senior ones who are
approaching the level of Grade 2 Pilot. The main role U/Ts play in the
operation of a VGS is to carry out ground duties safely and efficiently
to enable a smooth flying operation.
The first
things that U/Ts learn are how to carry out Daily Inspections of the Landrovers,
Winch and Cables, and how to set up the airfield on the appropriate runway
for the day, as chosen by the Duty Instructor. U/Ts also carry out tasks throughout
the day such as retrieving gliders and cables, as well as winching.
Flying
training for U/Ts is focused on increasing accuracy, skill and judgement,
with safety at all times being the key consideration. Training consists
of dual consolidation flying with a B Category or above Instructor, as
well as building up the number of solos. When a U/T has done a minimum
of 70 launches with at least 20 solos and is considered to have flying
of a high enough standard, they are eligible to take the test to become
a Grade Two Pilot.
