The step
to Grade 1 (G1) Pilot is arguably the biggest a member of staff will take
during their time on a gliding squadron. To be eligible for the test which,
like that for G2 is done with either the CO or CFI, 150 launches must
have been completed with at least 30 solos as a G2.
During
the test for for G1, a G2 must show an improved standard of flying skills,
be able the land within a defined area (+/- 50m) and fly within 5 knots
of a selected speed and 5 degrees of a selected heading. They must also
know how to prepare a cadet for flight and be capable of carrying out
the exercises for a Gliding Induction Course.
Upon
successful completion of the test, the pilot will be re-designated as
a G1 and will then be eligible to take up their first passengers. It is
also the point at which the person is permitted to wear Air Cadet Glider
Pilot Wings (without crown) and will be the first time that the person
has flown with someone else as captain of the aircraft. The main task
for G1s is to deliver the Gliding Induction Course to cadets who are visiting
the gliding school for the day with their ATC squadron or CCF unit.
G1s are
only allowed to let passengers have control of the aircraft when above
500 feet, so the pilot gets plenty of experience in varying conditions,
allowing them to polish their flying to a very high standard. This is
very important when the transition to Qualified Gliding Instructor (QGI)
is being made. After
having completed the minimum number of launches and been assessed as having
above average flying skills, a G1 is ready to go to Central Gliding School
for an Instructors course. Upon successful completion they will be a 'C'
Category QGI.
