Successful
completion of the 'B' Category Instructor course at RAF Syerston, means
that an Instructor is now classed as competent without the need for the
3 monthly check flights with a flying supervisor. 'B' Cats are qualified
not only to teach the GS syllabus, but also the advanced exercises taught
at AGT and beyond. They will also be eligible to wear Senior Instructor
wings, which are like the glider pilot wings with the addition of a crown
above the centre of the wings.
A new
responsibility for a 'B' Cat is to be on the Duty Instructor (DI) rota.
The DI for any given day is responsible for ensuring the efficient and
safe conduct of VGS operations. This duty starts first thing in the morning
with the decision of runway to use based on the local weather conditions.
The DI is also responsible for the allocation of crews to aircraft and
personnel to ground duties, ensuring that the daily tasking is completed
as smoothly and safely as possible. After the flying task has been completed,
the DI must then ensure that all paperwork is completed properly.
'B' Cats
are also permitted to send UT Instructors and AGT cadets solo, after completing
the minimum number of check flights with them. When a 'B' Cat has completed
a minimum of 600 launches in that category, if recommended, they may attend
an 'A' Category Instructors course at RAF Syerston.
